Black culture has deemed the term "baby mama" as reference to the mother of a child, with whom you share with the father. What was once a common reference has become negative in nature. Single mothers have become "baby mama's." It is time to change the negative connotation associated with "baby mama." Cultural appropriation implies that a "baby mama" is a loud, ratchet, ghetto woman who utilizes her child or children as pawns to gain financial mean or emotional distress from the father. Women who are still emotionally invested in the father, and are hostile toward him and the woman he is currently with. The animosity is astounding, but what about those of us who are not concerned in the slightest bit about what he does or with whom? What about the mothers still making it happen daily, spreading themselves thin, and pushing their needs/wants to the side? The mothers who still chase their dreams and attain their goals? Mothers are the backbone of the family. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 2010, single family homes made up 30% of Black or African American women. The dynamics of traditional lifestyles may have changed over the years, and perhaps there is nothing much we can do to alter that, however, changing our conversation, and what we choose to answer too is a wonderful start.
